#ProtectMaunaKea 73

Kūpa‘a ma hope o ka ‘āina i ka pono, i ke aloha.⠀

As I ground deep into my body and align my piko in the protection and ancient power of my homelands, I recall the names of eight generations of ancestors that came before me – ancestors that lived the old ways, ancestors that saw the Hawai‘i they once knew change before their very eyes, ancestors who lived through the pain and tragedy of colonization, forced occupation and illegal annexation. Ancestors who passed down their wisdom, their stories, their courage, their strength, their unwavering resilience – despite the heartache of seeing their lands, ways, and language stolen from them – they overcame over and over again and that lineage of aloha still prevails in our very veins. What a sacred gift from the ancients ones to behold and cherish. ⠀

I see their strength in you, Mom. I hear them when you speak, when you chant, when you sing. I heard them when you asked these Police Officers to remember who they are and treat the kūpuna and Kia‘i with dignity and respect. I heard them when they listened. ⠀

On this cold misty mountain morning, I give thanks to all that is for the blessing of been born your daughter in this life time. To have been born Kanaka. To have been born a descendent of Mauna Kea. ⠀

I love you and I will stand with you like a mountain for our mountain.⠀

Kū Kia‘I Mauna,⠀
na‘u me ke aloha ‘āina,⠀

na Hāwane⠀
